Post #5 - Reflection on performance for Oral Presentation 2.

On the 26th of March, our project group, also known as the Friends of Green, gave a presentation to a panel of judges. My group members are Kai Ren, Geetika, Dyu and Duc. Our project topic was that there was a lack of awareness on the impact of diet on global warming. We discussed the possible solutions how we managed to implement them. We then concluded with a Q&A for the judges. I will now reflect on some of the good and bad points of this presentation.

I realized that I was quite nervous during the beginning of my presentation. Thus, I stumbled a lot and forget what I wanted to say. Not only that, I kept saying “yeah” out of habit throughout the course of my presentation. Besides that, I tend to keep looking at the screen during the presentation. Thus there are many areas where I need to improve on.

On the other hand, I did well as I managed to get the audience attention by varying my tone. Not only that, I managed to use humor, which is vital for maintaining the audience’s attention. I also find that I gave a clear and concise presentation and ensured that everyone in the audience understood what I was trying to say. Besides that, I gave comparisons and examples to further emphasize my point and get people to understand the situation better. Another aspect that I did well in is that I managed to use hand gestures to further illustrate my point.

Overall I find the team performed rather well for this presentation. We used attractive power point slides and pictures to maintain the attention of the audience. However, I find that there were bad points too. One was the interview video. It was too soft and the audience could not hear what the interviewee was saying. We could also give out a few sample survey forms to let the audience have a better understanding of what kind of result we are trying to get out of the survey.

Finally, although our group performed rather well during this presentation, we must not be complacent. There are always areas for improvement and I must strive to keep improving and give a better presentation in the future

Hi Michael,
From the view of a audience, I think you have done very well. ( Because my turn is next to you, so I tried to listen very carefully haha). Your presentation is quite success, it can keep the audience's attention. Besides, I think you have managed to explain the charts, statistics easily. It helps our presentation a lot.

About our group performance, I agree that the video should have been edited better. One other solution is we should know how to control the sound system in the tutorial room, which we cannot figure out.

By the way, my name is Duy, not Dyu haha.

Cheers,
Duy.

Hi Michael,

I agree that there are always areas for improvement, particularly for our project. I think by practicing a lot all of us can improve weaknesses of each individuals.

I really feel that your individual performance is very good. You are successful in maintaining the audience's attention by using emphasis of key points, giving some jokes. Especially, you 've done very well in explaining from the surveys we achieved. It is essential to make all the information we want to convey as clearly as possible. You also can make some connections to the rest, which help our group presentation as the whole focused and consistent.

However, I also feel that you are quite hasty in your beginning. Your speed is quite fast, maybe as you felt nervous. And using "yeah" in some sentences is also a bad habit.

Best regards,
Duc

Hey Michael,
Your reflection not only describes the shortcomings of the both the group and your individual presentation but also introduces the reader to the topic and group members. I feel this is a good thing to do.
You have dealt well with details like the visual aids used, the Q/A round and the interview in your reflection. I feel this makes your reflection a detailed one and your comment on each detail makes it personal. So, well done!
Perhaps you could have an improved on the introduction and payed more attention on the correct usage of grammer and tense in your reflection.

Cheers
Geetika

From my perspective, the faster pace of your presentation in contrast with my was a much needed change after the long and information heavy presentation on my part. I felt that it helped revitalize the audience and help focus attention back to the topic at hand, namely our project. And while there are some areas of improvement as you pointed out, I thought you settled in quite well after the first 2 slides. Also the use of humor and relateable examples also helped the audience connect with the information presented.

I find your reflection a fair and balanced one as you identified both areas of improvement as well as good practices which you included. I would have liked a brief summary of the points you felt could be improved upon as well. I agree that a clear and concise presentation best captures the audience's attention and brings the message across and liked how you identified that in your presentation.

Once again I would like to thank you for all the effort and support in this project. It was a pleasure working with you and as always please feel free to contact me via email or HP regarding any questions regarding our project topic. As always I hope we can remain in contact via our facebook group.
